HOLY UNMERCENARIES

Holy Unmercenaries (meaning unmaterialistic or non-commercial. In Greek the term is anargyroi, meaning ‘’no silver“) is an epithet applied to a number of Christian saints who did not accept payment for good deeds. These include healers or Christian physicians who, in opposition to medical practice of the day, tended to the sick free of charge. Out of pure love of God and neighbour, they healed the sick and mended the souls of others while asking nothing in return—a pure self-sacrifice born out of love. The Unmercenary Healers were not self-serving. They had no ulterior motives. Rather, they showed a Christ-like love for all, and they gave themselves for all. Dubbed the “UNMERCENARIES” for their refusal to accept money for their services, they also came to be acknowledged as miracle or wonder workers for the remarkable cures they were able to effect. They fulfilled Christ’s command: “Freely have you received; freely give” (Mat 10:8). As they healed in the name of Christ, the HOLY UNMERCENARIES preached the Gospel with the hope that souls and bodies would be healed unto the abundant life and salvation through God’s grace. In their lives on earth, these physicians worked to heal all without concern for gain, and who since their repose continue to heal by their prayers those who call upon them in faith.  Among those Great Saints are Cyrus and John, Tryphon, Artemius, and the others, as well as Cosmas and Damian, and the martyr and healer Panteleimon.  The HOLY UNMERCENARIES are invoked in the service of Holy Unction. Hymns to them are traditionally chanted after the service while the faithful receive the Holy Oil.  Christ is the True Physician, but we can only be healed if we allow the light of Christ into our darkest, most hidden places.

SAINTS ANARGYRES

SAINTS ANARGYRES (GR anárgyroi) est une épithète signifiant littéralement « sans argent »: elle qualifie les saints thaumaturges (ceux qui font des miracles) qui, contrairement aux médecins, n’acceptaient aucun paiement pour leurs services et attiraient par leurs actions un grand nombre de gens à la foi chrétienne.  Ayant reçu gratuitement la grâce du Saint-Esprit grâce à laquelle ils pouvaient chasser les esprits impurs et guérir toutes sortes de maladies sans autre remède que leur prière, ils soignaient sans aucune distinction les riches comme les pauvres, les étrangers comme leurs proches, sans jamais demander la moindre somme d’argent. On accourait de tous les horizons vers eux et chacun y trouvait guérison et réconfort dans la mesure de sa foi. Ils accomplissaient ainsi le commandement du Christ: « Vous avez reçu gratuitement, donnez gratuitement » (Mt 10,8), et démontraient un amour semblable à Christ pour tous.  Alors qu’ils guérissaient au nom du Christ, les SAINTS ANARGYRES prêchaient l’Évangile avec l’espoir que les âmes et les corps seraient guéris pour la vie et le salut éternels par la grâce de Dieu. Sur terre, ces médecins ont travaillé pour guérir tous sans souci de gain, et depuis leur repos dans Le Christ, ils continuent de guérir par leurs prières ceux qui les invoquent avec foi.  Parmi ces SAINTS ANARGYRES nous retrouvons saints Côme (ou à l’ancienne Cosme) et Damien, saints Kyros et Jean, et Sampson, et saint Pantéleimon.  Les SAINTS ANARGYRES sont invoqués au service de la Sainte Onction. Des hymnes en leur honneur sont chantés après le service pendant que les fidèles reçoivent l’huile sainte.  Christ est le seul vrai médecin, mais nous ne pouvons être guéris que si nous permettons à Sa lumière d’entrer au fond de nous, dans les endroits les plus sombres et les plus cachés.
