THE CROSS

The CROSS is the central symbol for Christians, not only as the instrument of the world's salvation by the crucified Christ, but also as the constant witness to the fact that we cannot be Christians  unless we live with the Cross as the very content of our lives in this world. "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" (Mk 8:34).  The Cross of Jesus Christ is the joy and boast of Christians. By the Cross we were saved and by the Cross the demons are put to flight. Wearing the Cross on our person is a fundamental and simple way to keep Christ in our daily life, to fight the influence of the devil and to bear witness to Christ.  Infants and adults who are baptized and chrismated in the Orthodox Church receive a blessed gold Cross by their sponsor to be worn around the neck from the time of their Baptism to their departure from this earthly life. Through Holy Baptism "we put on Christ," becoming members of His Body, the Church.  The Cross is not merely jewelry or decoration for the Orthodox Christian, but the sign of the triumph of Jesus Christ over death and our belonging to Christ, Our Lord and God. Through the Cross, He destroyed the very power of death and our captivity to Satan by descending into Hades filling the place of death with Life and the place of darkness with Light, making a way for us into the Kingdom of Heaven.  As they who walk on a long way and are bowed down by fatigue find great relief under the cool shade of a leafy tree, so do we find comfort under the Life-giving Cross, which our Fathers “planted” on the Third Sunday of Lent. Thus, we are fortified and enabled to continue our Lenten journey rested and encouraged.

LA CROIX

Pour les chrétiens, la CROIX est un symbole central, non seulement parce qu'elle est l'instrument du salut opéré par le Christ, mais aussi parce qu'elle témoigne de la vocation des disciples du Christ : " Celui qui veut venir à ma suite, qu'il se renie lui-même, qu'il prenne sa croix et qu'il me suive " (Mc 8:34).  Le signe de la Croix que nous faisons sur nous-mêmes résume et récapitule toute notre vie chrétienne. Par la Croix nous avons été sauvés et par la Croix les démons sont mis en fuite. Porter la croix est un moyen simple et fondamental de combattre l’influence du diable et de témoigner du Christ. Par la foi au Seigneur Jésus-Christ et en Sa mort sur la Croix, le salut a été gratuitement accordé à toute l’humanité.  Les bébés et les adultes baptisés et chrismés reçoivent de leur parrain une croix en or à porter autour du cou. Par le saint baptême, "nous revêtons le Christ", devenant membres de son corps, de l'Église.   La Croix, où par sa mort le Christ a vaincu la mort, préfigure Sa Résurrection. C’est là, lorsque le Christ meurt, que la mort est vaincue, car le Christ ressuscitera, et Il meurt comme nous pour que nous ressuscitions comme Lui. Par la Croix, Il a détruit le pouvoir même de la mort et de notre captivité envers Satan.   Il est normal que ceux qui vivent réellement le Carême puissent ressentir une certaine fatigue à la mi-carême, et, de ce fait, recherchent un peu de repos et de réconfort. C'est pourquoi, l'Église «plante» la Vénérable et Vivifiante Croix, le troisième dimanche du Grand Carême, afin que nous nous prosternions devant elle et que nous nous dirigions vers les jours saints de la Passion et de la Résurrection du Seigneur, reposés et encouragés.
