THE SACREMENT OF BAPTISM

"For as many as been baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Gal. 3:27).  The Sacrament of BAPTISM was commanded by our Savior, and has always been understood to be the entry of a believer into the Christian Life: ''Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.'' (Mt. 28:19-20).  We baptize by immersing three times in water - in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The triple immersion symbolizes the three days Christ spent in the tomb as well as the Holy Trinity.  Through the act of immersion, the baptized person dies to this world and is born again in the resurrection of Christ into eternal life. He is clothed with the "garments of salvation" (Isa. 61:10) symbolized by the white baptismal robe which is the "new humanity"  of Jesus himself, the New and Heavenly Adam (Jn. 3 ; Rom. 5:1; 1 Cor. 15:22).   For further reading please consult: https://saintgeorgemontreal.org/orthodox-praxis/when-a-child-is-born/

LE SACREMENT DU BAPTÊME

Le sacrement du BAPTÊME(du GR baptizein « immerger ») est nouvelle naissance, le passage de l’état d’esclave à celui d’homme libéré. Il consiste en une triple immersion faite « au nom du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit » (Mt 28:19-20) dans une eau sanctifiée. Après l’immersion, le baptisé revêt des vêtements neufs, blancs, symbolisant ainsi son passage à un état nouveau, selon l’expression de Saint Paul : « Vous avez revêtu le Christ ». La triple procession autour des fonts baptismaux, symbolise l’éternité.  Dans l’Église orthodoxe, les parrain et marraine n’assistent pas au baptême en qualité de simples « témoins ».
